A south Auckland group of biochar enthusiasts spent an afternoon last week, testing their slightly temperamental continuous biochar kiln. About 25% of the wood chip poured into the hopper came out as clean biochar and they appear to have solved the problem of a runaway thermal reaction that reached over 800C in a previous run.
This run was cooler (at times a little too cool) right up till the delivery chute began to produce heavy smoke which, fortunately, finally caught fire.
